The main thing I took away from my time as a student at LMC is to throw yourself into something, even if you are worried about it. The support networks at the College help so much to develop confidence to do something. LMC also encourage their students to run their own projects, which is something that I believe that has helped me after College.
Alfie began his journey at Lancaster & Morecambe College in October 2022 on our Level 3 Business course to explore his future career prospects.
Prior to joining College, Alfie was unsure of his career path, but thanks to the help he recieved from College he is now on his way to becoming a Journalist, his dream career. When studying any course at LMC careers are embedded into the curriculumn, as well as extra career support being available from The Hex.
I joined in October 2022 after feeling dissatisfied with my previous college and enrolled in the Level 3 Business course because I was unsure of which career direction to take. Since studying at Lancaster & Morecambe College, it has become clear what I want to do, and that's all thanks to the brilliant staff and services available here. I chose LMC because I wanted to stay close to home and because the experiences, facilities, and advice available are second to none.
Alfie studied on our Level 3 Business course where he developed his skills and behaviours in various areas, including: communication, writing, leadership and networking. Alfie also decided to become a Student Governor during his time at LMC, which allowed him to share his voice and opinions with a broad range of people and bring positive change to the College.
The most enjoyable aspect of the course is the tutors and the general atmosphere at the College. The tutors are always ready to listen and chat, not just about the course but also about other issues, offering real-life guidance that helped me develop. The College feels open yet safe, with lots of greenery.
The broad range of topics covered in the Business course has allowed Alfie to develop professionally, especially for his future career. He now feels confident in his ability to interview a wide range of people and is more knowledgeable about the impact businesses have globally and the pressures they face.
The main takeaway from my time as a student at LMC is to throw yourself into something, even if you're worried about it. The support networks at the College are incredibly helpful in developing the confidence to take action. LMC also encourages students to run their own projects, which is something that has benefited me even after leaving College.
In addition to his role as Student Governor, Alfie participated in youth social action work. At LMC, we encourage students to volunteer and create their own projects to benefit both the College and the wider community. Alfie chose to create a project to raise political awareness at the College by inviting local candidates from various political parties to host Q&A sessions. This project allowed Alfie to further develop his confidence and communication skills while also providing his fellow students with more knowledge and confidence in voting.
My biggest accomplishment since leaving College was the opportunity to work for Sky News during their General Election coverage, where I reported on the results of the Ribble Valley constituency, interviewed candidates, and gained a deeper understanding of the voting process. Starting in September, I’ll be attending the University of Salford to study Broadcast Journalism, where I’ll be interviewing people, gaining insights into the world of journalism, and contributing to the production of programs.
When asked what he would say to someone thinking of taking a business course, Alfie said:
Take the leap and do it! The opportunities that can arise from it are limitless, and it allows you to understand the world in real life, not just in a classroom. The people you meet will make it worth it, especially the tutors who work really hard to ensure they deliver up-to-date information. Jump at every opportunity you get—you really get back what you put in, so make the most of it!
Teaching is my favourite part of the role, I love being able to help people reach that lightbulb moment in class! I also enjoy being able to inspire the next generation of Residential workers.
I enjoy being part of the team and thinking of new ways to support local businesses in realising their potential. Watching learners transition from a one-day course to gaining qualifications motivates me to continue teaching at LMC.
Behind every great business is a fantastic accountant! AAT qualifications are highly valued and they can really push you to achieve great things in your career. The whole team at LMC are dedicated and excited about giving you the best possible start in your new journey!
Industry specific apprenticeships are a great way to learn new skills and knowledge, achieve a recognised qualification and earn a wage. Customer service is the corner stone of every successful business, and courses at LMC will help you identify, improve and introduce these skills successfully.
The course gives people experiences of business in many forms which can be used in a huge variety of possible future careers – past students have gone on to work in sectors as diverse as fashion, charities, social media, nuclear energy, defence manufacturing and the public sector.
It’s really difficult to state just one thing I love about working at Lancaster & Morecambe College because there are so many! I really wanted to work here because the college has a fantastic reputation. I love introducing new ways of working and keeping up with relevant trends to improve the course, and I really enjoy the supportive environment that we create for our students.
