While playing video games has been a fun part of the course, so far I would say my favourite part has been the opportunity to look in-depth into the world of gaming and how the sports industry is rapidly adjusting to making video game play a key area of the industry. I’ve also enjoyed the opportunity to learn about the business side of Esports as it has given me more of a ‘behind the scenes’ insight into gaming.

Jack started his learning at LMC back in 2016 when he studied iMedia Level 2. Since then, Jack has completed the Art & Design Level 2 course and is now in his first year of the Esports Level 3 Extended Diploma, allowing him some extra time to look at university courses whilst increasing his media-related skillset.

Jack chose to stay at LMC after completing his qualification in Art & Design because the Esports Level 3 was an opportunity to expand his knowledge on his two main interests; gaming and media, in addition to extra modules in sport and business, along with presenting an opportunity to meet new people who share similar interests.

Studying during a global pandemic has been a strange experience for all learners nation-wide, however, Jack reflects on his time studying Esports positively:

While playing video games has been a fun part of the course, so far I would say my favourite part has been the opportunity to look in-depth into the world of gaming and how the sports industry is rapidly adjusting to making video game play a key area of the industry. I’ve also enjoyed the opportunity to learn about the business side of Esports as it has given me more of a ‘behind the scenes’ insight into gaming.

Jack explained that his time on the Esports Level 3 has helped him to develop both personal and professional skills:

Along with developing a greater understanding of sport and business, my studies have given me a greater understanding of time management and responsibility. I’ve also developed more independence as most tasks are designed to be completed individually which has required me to use my time effectively to meet my deadlines.

Jack started his course in September 2020 meaning that for the majority of his course Jack has completed his learning remotely in response to Covid-19 Lockdown restrictions. We spoke to Jack about his experience of working remotely and he explained that the challenging circumstances have actually resulted in some positive outcomes:

I feel a sense of pride after this past year. I feel really accomplished with the work I’ve completed and the effort I’ve put in this year, which has given me a much more positive attitude towards myself. Despite the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, which has presented its challenges, I’d say it’s been a successful year of learning for me.

When asked what advice he would give to someone considering studying Esports Level 3 at LMC, Jack said:

Do your research. The course isn’t just about playing video games; it’s actually heavily focused on the business and media side of the gaming industry. There’s a lot to learn and a lot to enjoy so I'd recommend it to anyone who’s interested in getting into the Esports industry, whether that’s as a player, streamer, coach or even business-person.
