The Art & Design Level 2 Diploma is designed to provide an introduction to art and design. It has been developed to support students who would benefit from a more practical approach to learning, providing them with the transferrable skills, knowledge and self-confidence to enable them to progress to further art and design education and/or employment within the creative industries.

Learners are in College for three days a week which includes English and Maths for those who have not yet achieved a grade 4 or above in these subjects. When not at College, learners are expected to undertake home study such as research and sketchbook tasks.

On completion of this course you will receive UAL Level 2 Diploma in Art & Design.

Course Overview

The course is made up of the following units:

  • Introduction to materials, processes and technical skills in Art & Design

  • Introduction to contextual research in Art & Design

  • Introduction to drawing skills

  • Introduction to communication skills in Art & Design

  • Solving 2D creative problems

  • Solving 3D creative problems

  • Solving time-based creative problems

  • Developing and producing a personal project in Art & Design

These units are taught through a series of practical project briefs designed to introduce students to a range of art and design activities including drawing, artist research and experimenting with a range of 2D, 3D and digital processes. At the end of the course learners produce a final project which is exhibited at our end of year exhibition, and is graded to award the overall grade for the qualification.

Course activities often include visits to art galleries and museums including Liverpool Tate and Manchester City Art Gallery. We also visit locations in the local area to take photographs and make sketches for project research.

Art & Design Level 2 incorporates live projects where possible to give learners work related experience relevant to their course. Past briefs for Level 2 students have included designing artwork for the Kendal Comic Festival shop window trail, and costumes for Ludus Dance for the Light Up Lancaster festival.

Industry Links

Throughout the course learners undertake live briefs and have the opportunity to complete a work placement. In previous years, learners have worked with Digital Advantage to gain experience of working in a pop-up creative design agency.
