The Art & Design - HNC Level 4 offers students a broad introduction to the subject area via a mandatory core of learning, while allowing for the acquisition of skills and experience through the selection of a further unit across a range of occupational sectors. This effectively builds underpinning core skills, with general specialisation; preparing the student for further specialisation at Level 5.

Students will gain a wide range of sector knowledge tied to practical skills gained in research, self-study, directed study and workplace scenarios.

Course Overview

At Level 4, students develop a broad knowledge and awareness of the key aspects of the creative industries sector through four core units, which includes one unit assessed through a Pearson-set assignment. The core units are:

  • Professional Development

  • Contextual Studies

  • Individual Project

  • Techniques & Processes

Two more specialist units will supplement the mandatory units, chosen to match the learner’s specialist pathway.

Learners are expected to be in College for up to three days a week and will need to complete regular home study.

While on the course you will complete a variety of projects through which you will develop a range of practical skills and develop your practice through material and contextual investigation. The assignments will be linked to a vocational context, and, whenever possible, working for a real client.

During the programme you will have the opportunity to explore personal themes and concerns, using a range of media. It is a primarily studio based course where you will spend time building an individual portfolio of work.

Where possible there will be organised trips to galleries, studios and museums.
