Course Overview

You will be working towards a AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting. This qualification will help prepare you for a career within accountancy, providing you with a solid foundation in finance administration. You will learn finance, accountancy, business and communication skills.

You will play an integral part of a team responsible for maintaining efficient and accurate financial function in an organisation. Working under supervision you will work towards the creation of accurate financial statements and data to allow your organisation and its work to run smoothly.

The main purpose of the job role is carrying out both accounting and finance tasks, such as: carrying out basic bookkeeping activities working with both sales and purchase ledgers, running calculations, ensuring records and payments are accurate, recording cash and data entry, financial and accounting data entry, reconciling figures, trial balances, double- entry bookkeeping, handling accounts payable and receivable, gathering and inputting financial data and checking for errors.

You can be working with range a both internal and external stakeholders.

As an Accounts and Finance assistant you will be responsible for working with accountants to support them with routine duties which can vary depending on the team structure and size of the business you are working for. However, you can expect to use digital finance and accounting systems and tools to collate and enter data. Potential employers for this apprenticeship can include corporate businesses, sole traders, partnerships, public sector, not for profit organisations as well as educational institutions. You can be working in house for an organisation or work for an accountancy firm, bookkeeping practice, shared service provider, self-employed or on behalf of different clients.

As an apprentice you need to be employed for at least 30 hours a week and attend college one day a week on a Wednesday.

As part of this apprenticeship and qualification you will be studying and working towards four units-

  • Introduction to Bookkeeping

  • Principles of Bookkeeping Controls

  • Principles of Costing

  • The Business Environment

As an apprentice you will complete 12 months of practical training in the workplace and classroom study to gain the AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting which will be assessed through exams. Following this you will complete an End Point Assessment (EPA) over 3 months.

The End Point Assessment for this Apprenticeship will consist of two parts:

  • An Interview- This will last for 60 minutes, and will focus on the knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs) mapped to this assessment method.

  • An Integrated knowledge test- This forms part of the apprenticeships EPA as well as the awarding of the qualification. For learners studying the AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting the knowledge test will be assessing the Business Environment unit of work.

Progression Routes

Following completion of this qualification, you can continue your studies on the Level 3 Diploma in Accounting or Apprenticeship.

You could also work in a variety of sectors as a result of achieving this qualification; with potential employers including sole traders, public sector and educational institutions for example. You can work in house for an organisation or for an accountancy firm or book keeping practice.

You can progress onto work as an accounts administrator, accounts assistant, accounts payable clerk and purchase or sales ledger clerk.

4 GCSES at Grade 3/D or higher including English and Maths or Functional Skills Level 1.
