The Access to HE course is an intensive and demanding Level 3 course which provides learners aged 19+ with the opportunity to gain the qualification they need to progress to university-level study.

Course Overview

Often regarded as the adult alternative to A-Levels, students on the Access to HE course complete a series of essay-style assignments and in-class tests to accumulate 60 Level 3 credits in a range of subjects, including Human Physiology, Psychology, Sociology, Social Issues in Healthcare and Study Skills.

Students will attend lessons in College for 2 days (12 hours) per week and should also expect to commit a further 15-18 hours per week to independent home study. On successful completion of the course, students are awarded an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Health and Social Care.

Progression Routes

The Access to HE course will prepare you to progress to a degree course in a field related to the course topics studied, degree examples include:

  • Nursing

  • Primary Teaching

  • Social Sciences

  • Social Work

This course includes a substantial amount of careers-related learning to support progression to the suitable next step. Students will have the opportunity to engage with guest speakers from local universities, attend talks by professionals from fields such as primary teaching and social services, and take part in virtual lectures.

Entry Requirements

The offer of a place onto this course will be determined by the following three factors:

  • Consideration of prior achievements, experience and/or qualifications

  • Completion of the initial assessment to a satisfactory level

  • The student’s performance at interview

In addition, learners at LMC must:

  • Have an enthusiasm for the subject

  • Have a commitment to study (attendance, punctuality and behaviour)

  • Be able to work independently

  • Show proven interest in progressing to HE

Different universities and courses have different entry requirements, it is the student’s responsibility to check that these would be met when applying for an Access to HE Diploma. This could include subject specific GCSE grades and relevant experience.
