This course is for anyone who is interested in a career in the science sector. It will offer the opportunity to build on your understanding, knowledge and skills in chemistry, biology and physics.

Course Overview

The timetable will cover 3 days per week in College; lessons are a mix of classroom-based theory lessons and practical workshop sessions where you will gain a broad understanding and knowledge of science principles and practice.

Subjects that will be covered may include:

  • Principles of Science

  • Chemistry and our Earth

  • Energy and our Universe

  • Biology and our Environment

  • Applications of Chemical Substances

  • Applications of Physical Science

  • Health Applications of Life Science

  • Scientific Skills

Optional units (subject to change):

  • Practical Scientific Project

  • Growing Plants for Food

  • Investigating a Crime Scene

  • Science in Medicine

The optional units have a practical focus, link to progression to Forensics and include a sustainable element.

Industry Links

Work related experience is an essential part of the curriculum allowing students to apply the knowledge they have gained in class and develop the work behaviours required for the industry. You will undertake a range of work-related activities with industry specialists and employers.

Progression opportunities at LMC include progression to Level 3 Forensic Science

Entry Requirements

To study this course, you must:

  • Show enthusiasm for the subject area

  • Demonstrate a commitment to study

  • Be prepared to work outdoors in all weather conditions

  • Have good interpersonal skills

  • Be able to work independently

  • Follow a strict set of health & safety rules and dress code

You must also have 4 GCSE's at grade D/3 or higher including Maths or English OR a Level 1 related qualification PLUS grade D/3 or higher in Maths or English.
