This course has been designed to support a group of students who want to gain the basic knowledge of Health & Social Care within children’s & young people’s settings, as an initial stepping stone towards progression onto higher level provision in Health & Social Care or Child Education.
All students studying this course will undertake the CACHE Level 1 Certificate in Health & Social Care in Children’s & Young People’s Settings.
This course consists of 7 mandatory units and 2 optional units that will be assessed through a variety of methods including assignments, coursework and portfolio presentation.
The 7 mandatory units studied, will be:
Understand the range of service provision and roles within health and social care (adults and children and young people), early years and childcare
Understand the principles and values in health and social care (adults and children and young people), early years and childcare
Awareness of protection and safeguarding in health and social care (adults and children and young people), early years and childcare
Introduction to communication in health and social care (adults and children and young people), early years and childcare
Introductory awareness of equality and inclusion in health, social care and children’s and young people’s settings
Introductory awareness of health and safety in health, social care and children’s and young people’s settings
Introductory awareness of person-centred support in health, social care and children’s and young people’s settings
You will spend 3 days a week in College, with course content delivered as a mixture of theory and practical sessions, with guest speakers and external events forming part of the course.
Students are expected to find their own work placement that must cover up to 30 hours over the year and must be done on days not in College, this will be discussed further whilst on your course.
There is also the opportunity to take part in the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Upon course completion, you may choose to progress onto further study at College, for example moving onto Caring for Children under 5 – Level 1.
If shown to be committed and ready for Level 2 study, you could choose to progress onto the Diploma for Early Years Practitioner Level 2, however this would be a challenging step as this course has requirements for regular work placement, synoptic assessments and exams.
To study this course, you must:
Show enthusiasm for the subject
Enjoy working with other people
Show a commitment to study in regards to attendance, punctuality & behaviour
Be able to work independently
Have good interpersonal skills
Be able to source their own work placement.
All students who do not currently hold English and maths at GCSE grade C/4 or above, will be expected to attend Maths & English lessons.
