An Apprenticeship is a perfect choice if you want to continue your studies and develop your skills, knowledge and behaviours in a specific industry, while also earning a salary in full-time employment; kickstarting your long-term career path.

Course Overview

Studying towards a Level 3 Craft Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship provides you with the opportunity to build and develop your skill set in the Joinery industry. As an apprentice you will be working with building materials predominantly wood in order to create and install building components.

The main difference between the Level 2 apprenticeship and the Level 3 apprenticeship, is that upon qualification at Level 3 you will have more responsibility managing both your own and other peoples work and you should be able to complete more complex and non-standard work.

You will be working with wood-based materials and associated products in order to create and install complex building components. This day to day involves shaping and cutting materials and installing finished materials which can include complex and decorative components.

You will be responsible for carrying out all your work safely, to the high quality specified by the customer, using the correct tools.

Good communication skills are essential in this trade as you will be liaising with other construction workers including bricklayers, plasterers, plumbers, supervisors, site managers, architects, designers as well as customers and contractors.

This trade includes two different options either working on a construction site as an Advanced Site Carpenter or in a workshop as an Advanced Architectural Joiner.

As an Advanced Site carpenter, you will typically work on a building site supporting in the construction of domestic and commercial properties. Day to day duties can include-

  • Preparing and installing complex building components including staircases with turns, high quality doors and complex wall and floor units.

  • Erecting structural carpentry such as inclined roofs and joists

  • Erecting complex roof structures such as inclined roofs with gables, roof verges and eaves including finishings, joists, roof coverings, dormers and features.

  • Installing complex and non- standard doors and window frames, partitions with a change in direction and staircases with turns.

  • Installing accessible service encasements, bespoke wall and floor units, panelling and stair components.

As an Advanced Architectural carpenter, you will typically be working within a workshop. Day to day duties can include-

  • Producing complex building components through the process of setting out, marking out and manufacturing architectural products such as windows, doors, staircases with turns and panelling.

  • Fitting and assembling non-standard complex timber products

  • Setting out complex work tasks for non-standard architectural joinery products including door sets, doors, windows, units and fitments, staircases both straight and with turns and products with a single and double curvature feature.

  • Using and maintaining marking tools, hand tools, power tools and associated equipment required for your work.

Choosing a career in joinery you will be involved in both the new build and the refurbishment construction sector.

To apply for this apprenticeship, you need to be employed for 30 hours or more a week and you will attend college one day a week.

At the end of your apprenticeship, you will be assessed by an End Point Assessment (EPA), which will assess you against the knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs) in the standard. The EPA will allow you to show an independent assessor how well you can carry out the trade you are training for.

Upon completion of this apprenticeship you will achieve a Level 3 Carpentry and Joinery Standard.

For additional information regarding the Craft Carpentry and Joinery standard, qualification and what is involved within the course please visit Institute of Apprenticeships and Technical Education.

Assessment

As an apprentice you will complete 15 months of practical training and then you will be assessed by an End Point Assessment (EPA).

The EPA has three assessment methods-

  • A multiple-choice test- This will be a closed book exam, lasting 70 minutes made up of 40 multiple choice questions.

  • Practical Assessment with Questions- This involves you being observed by an independent assessor completing a set of tasks. This assessment will take place over the course of 12 hours and whilst undertaking the tasks you will be asked at least 6 questions,

  • An interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence- This involves you as an apprentice being asked questions by an independent assessor. Your portfolio of evidence will help support you in answering the questions. It will take place over 90 minutes and you will be asked at least 10 questions regarding your occupation.

The result from the three assessments are then combined to decide the overall apprenticeship grade.

You will also be building up a portfolio of evidence throughout the duration of the programme in line with the referencing matrix to support you at End Point Assessment.
