Within this occupation you will be working with wood-based materials and products to both create and install building components in a variety of environments. Within this apprenticeship you can expect to be-
Shaping and cutting materials
Installing finished materials such as partitions, doors, staircases, window frames, mouldings, timber floor coverings
Installing structural components such as floor joists and roofs
An apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery encompasses both Site Joinery where work takes place on a construction site and Architectural Joinery where work takes place in a workshop. As an apprentice you will have the option to specialise in one of these areas depending on your employer.
As a Site Joiner you will be preparing and installing basic building components including 1st fixing and 2nd fixing. These include doors, straight staircases, wall and floor units. You will also be erecting structural carpentry and roof structures on either a building site or in domestic and commercial premises.As an Architectural joiner you will be creating building components by setting out, marking out and manufacturing basic architectural products.
Within your daily work as a joiner you will be interacting with professionals from various other construction trades such as bricklayers, plasterers, plumbers, supervisors, site management and architects as well as designers, contractors and customers.
You will be responsible for using machinery and tools under supervision in order to create structures or components from the designs, plans and specifications of both architects and designers in order to fulfil client expectations. As a site joiner these can include roof structures, floors, partitions and second fix work such as door frames and skirting while as an architectural joiner these can include doors, windows and stairs including ironmongery.
You need to be employed for 30 hours or more a week and you will attend college one day a week.
This apprenticeship is assessed through an End Point Assessment (EPA) at the end of the course duration, which will assess you against the knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs) in the standard. The EPA will allow you to show an independent assessor how well you can carry out the trade you are training for.
This is comprised of three parts:
End Point Assessment is made up of three parts;
Multiple choice test- This will be a closed book exam lasting 60 minutes, made up of 40 multiple choice questions.
Practical assessment with questions- This involves you as an apprentice being observed by an independent assessor completing a set task. While undertaking this task you will be asked at least 5 questions.
An Interview underpinned by a Portfolio of evidence- This involves you as an apprentice being asked questions by an independent assessor. Your portfolio of evidence will help support you in answering the questions. The interview typically lasts 45 to 50 minutes.
You will also be building up a portfolio of evidence throughout the duration of the programme in line with the referencing matrix to support you with your End Point Assessment.

All students gain work experience throughout their course with supportive and inspiring employers to enhance their employability skills and further their knowledge in the Construction industry. This Apprenticeship could lead to a long-term job opportunity or give you a great foundation for progressing onto starting your own business at locally or abroad.
You will be provided with your own Training Coordinator who will be there from day one of your Apprenticeship right through to the end. They are there to answer any questions you may have and to provide you with support throughout your training with us. The coordinator will make regular site visits, usually with the tutor, which allows us to see you in a relaxed environment, doing what you enjoy.
Once you have completed your course you will be able to discuss the possibility of moving on to the Advanced Carpentry & Joinery Level 3 Apprenticeship with your employer.

4 GCSES at Grade 3/D or higher including English and Maths or Functional Skills Level 1.
