This Apprenticeship will provide you with all the skills you need for starting a career in the fire and security industry. You will learn the underpinning knowledge of design, installation, commission and maintenance of electronic systems in and outside simple and complex premises to protect individuals, homes and properties from risk and danger.
It’s an occupation found within the security sector and your main day to day purpose within your job is the protection of individuals, homes and properties from risk, dangers and hazards.
Day to day this means you could be responsible for-
Installing fire, emergency and security systems to detect interruption or intrusion,
Providing surveillance
Monitoring and controlling access to buildings, properties and sites
Detecting fires and emergencies
You will be responsible for the planning, installation, testing, commissioning and handover of fire and security equipment. You will be carrying out preventative and corrective maintenance and be involved in the diagnosis of and repairing of faults on systems and their components.
You will learn how to carry out planned jobs to install new systems, modify and maintain existing systems as well as respond to call-outs to repair faulty systems where you will utilise your problem-solving skills.
It’s a varied job role and technicians can typically find themselves working both in and outside business premises and in customers’ homes using various forms of communication technologies with electric and electronic components.
As an apprentice you need to be employed for at least 30 hours a week and you will attend college one day a week.
This apprenticeship is assessed through an End Point Assessment (EPA). This is comprised of:
A practical assessment with questioning- This is where an independent assessor will observe you carrying out a set of tasks and ask you questions whilst you are working.
An interview supported by a portfolio of evidence- An independent assessor will ask you at least 6 questions. These can be related to aspects of your job role. The interview will last at least 60 minutes. Prior to the interview you will compile a portfolio of evidence which will support you during this part of the assessment.
Multiple Choice test- A closed book exam, made up of 60 multiple choice questions, over 75 minutes.
You will also be building up a portfolio of evidence throughout the duration of the programme.
At the end of the course you will be a fully qualified apprentice Fire Emergency and Security Systems Technician Apprenticeship Level 3.

All students gain work experience throughout their course with supportive and inspiring employers to enhance their employability skills and further their knowledge in the Construction industry. This Apprenticeship could lead to a long-term job opportunity or give you a great foundation for progressing onto starting your own business at locally or abroad.
You will be provided with your own Training Coordinator who will be there from day one of your Apprenticeship right through to the end. They are there to answer any questions you may have and to provide you with support throughout your training with us. The coordinator will make regular site visits, usually with the tutor, which allows us to see you in a relaxed environment, doing what you enjoy.
Upon completion of this apprenticeship you can progress onto further training or full time work as an alarm installer, fire systems engineer, security systems engineer and security systems technician as just a few examples in this varied industry.
