This Pearson GCSE English Language course has been designed to help you explore communication, culture and creativity. You will read a variety of literary and non-fiction texts from across a range of genres and time periods, developing your independent and critical reading skills.
Our GCSE English Language programme takes place over a full academic year from September until June and is designed to prepare you for two examination papers and a spoken language assessment.
Can I study for free?
If you are studying a legal entitlement course such as English, Maths or Essential Digital Skills - Entry Level, Level 1, or Level 2, or are unemployed, or earn less than £25,000 gross salary, then the answer is YES! When you enrol, you will need to provide evidence of your salary or benefits.
If you have achieved the qualification to be studied previously, or have an existing qualification at a higher level, then fees will apply.
Our GCSE English Language programme offers an interesting and engaging study of non-fiction and contemporary texts where you will have the opportunity to develop your reading skills. You will be shown how to confidently use quotations to develop and analyse a range of different authors’ writing. To encourage critical thinking, you will examine, compare and contrast language and structure use via a wide range of 19th, 20th and 21st century texts.
You will also use the course delivery to practise and improve transactional and imaginative writing skills considering audience and purpose. There is also a focus to progress spelling, punctuation and grammar use as well as using formal and informal vocabulary in writing and spoken language.
Students may choose to continue their studies within College by progressing onto:
• Access to HE - This course can also open up opportunities to a range of university courses.
The GCSE English Language course is delivered to those who demonstrate a good level of vocabulary knowledge, reading and writing skills prior to the start of the course. Therefore, assessment of all applicants’ reading and writing skills will be required before we offer a place on the programme. This will be discussed at interview once applications have been submitted.
If you do not hold a Level 2 Functional Skills or GCSE Grade 3/D in English Language qualification and do not demonstrate a similar level of these level of skills in the assessment, you can be offered the opportunity to study English at one of our many Functional Skills workshops.
This course costs £500.00, including exam fees.
You may be eligible for free study if you are 23 or under and this is your first full Level 2 or 3 course. Alternatively, if you are unemployed, receiving an eligible benefit, and taking the course to help you find employment.
