An Apprenticeship is a perfect choice if you want to continue your studies and develop your skills, knowledge and behaviours in a specific industry, while also earning a salary in full-time employment; kickstarting your long-term career path.

Course Overview

As a Level 2 General Welder Apprentice you will be working with metals in order to create high strength welds in two welding positions, using at least 1 arc welding process.

Typically, within this varied job role, your roles and responsibilities will include-

  • Working to make high strength joints between two or more parts. This is done through using high electrical energy in order to form an arc. This allows you to create engineered goods.

  • Quality checking your work to meet standards including carrying out visual inspection and dimensional checks.

  • Ensuring that the process and products produced meet quality standards and are produced to a timely schedule.

  • Complying with health and safety regulations and procedures, wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.

  • You can expect to be producing components for cars, ships, rail vehicles, containers and steelwork for bridges, buildings and gantries.

You can be working in fabrication shops, assembly yards, construction and building sites, factories and operational facilities which require maintenance and upgrade. You could also be employed by supply chain companies, a direct owner or operators.

As an apprentice you need to be employed for at least 30 hours a week and you will attend college one day a week.

You will be building up a portfolio of evidence throughout the duration of the programme to support you when you reach the End Point Assessment (EPA) stage of the apprenticeship which involves three parts:

  • A knowledge testformed of 30 multiple-choice questions relevant to all welders and specific welding questions in relation to the theoretical part of the knowledge/ skills modules selected by the employer. The test takes place over 60 minutes.

  • A practical/ oral examination– This involves you being observed by an independent assessor completing the series of tasks. It will take place over six hours and during this time the independent assessor will ask you at least four questions regarding the tasks you are carrying out and how it relates to your role as a welder.

  • An interview underpinned by a portfolio of evidence-This involves an independent assessor looking at your knowledge of the occupation and assessing if your behaviour meets the requirements specified in the standard. You will be asked at least six questions and the interview will last at least 45 minutes. You will use the portfolio of evidence you have built up over the programme in order to support you with the interview questions.
