The Hair Professional Level 2 Apprenticeship is a course, focusing on the development of the underlying principles and practical skills required to pursue a career in the hairdressing industry. You will learn about the practical application of hairdressing skills and the knowledge that is required to meet individual client requirements. This in turn will enable you to provide outstanding customer service.

As a Level 2 Hairdresser you will develop the foundations for a career in hairdressing and your main roles and
responsibilities will typically include-

• Styling and finishing hair
• Setting and dressing hair
• Cutting hair using a variety of techniques developed through the programme.
• Shampooing and conditioning
• Providing informed client consultations to meet the requirements of the client.
• Working within health and safety, infection control, legal requirements, industry protocols and manufacturer instructions within your work at all times to promote good practice.
• Colouring and lighten hair to change colour depth and tone, working to do some colour correction.

This is a varied sector and upon completion you can go onto work in a small salon or a large high street premises. Good communication and interpersonal skills are a necessity if you wish to go into this sector as you will be interacting with customers regularly in order to provide a high-quality service. You will also be communicating effectively with members of the salon team and associated hair and beauty professionals.

You will be providing hairdressing services which are based upon comprehensive consultation and relevant industry tests all whilst ensuring you are maintaining excellent client care skills, safe working practices and meeting legal, industry and organisational standards, procedures and protocols at all times.

As an apprentice you need to be employed for at least 30 hours a week and you will attend college one day a week.

Course Overview

This apprenticeship is assessed through an End Point Assessment (EPA). This is comprised of:

  • Multiple Choice Test- This is a closed book multiple choice exam lasting 60 minutes made up of 40 questions.

  • Practical Assessment with Questions- This involves being observed by an independent assessor, over 5 and a half hours completing a set of tasks. Over the duration of the assessment the assessor will ask you at least 3 questions about your work.

  • Professional Discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence- This involves you having a discussion with an independent assessor for 35 minutes. They will ask you at least 6 questions surrounding the occupation. Prior to this discussion you will build up a portfolio of evidence to help you answer the questions. This provides you with the opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge, skills and behaviour in line with the standard.

Throughout the duration of the programme, you will be building up a portfolio of evidence to support with your End Point Assessment.

Progression Routes

Upon completion of this apprenticeship you may wish to progress onto full time work or continue your studies by completing Level 3 Hairdressing.

To study this Apprenticeship you must:

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills

  • Enjoy working with people

  • Work well individually and as part of a team

  • Show enthusiasm for working in a hairdressing salon 

  • Have a willingness to learn and take instructions 

  • Have an interest in providing good customer service 

  • Demonstrate professionalism

  • Be willing to work using safe working practices

  • Commitment to regularly collecting evidence from your workplace to support your portfolio.

4 GCSES at Grade 3/D or higher including English and Maths or Functional Skills Level 1. Or a Level 1 in Hairdressing plus a grade 3/D or higher in Maths or English.
