Course Overview

As a Hospitality Supervisor apprentice, you will be entering an ever changing and exciting sector, where you will be learning about how to supervise staff, activities and events in a wide range of settings and businesses including bars, restaurants, cafés, conference centres, banqueting venues, hotels or contract caterers. As a supervisor you will be providing crucial support to management teams and once qualified you will be capable of independently supervising hospitality services and running shifts.

Supervisors typically work under pressure delivering quality customer service. Having the ability to motivate a team is essential within this role. The majority of supervisors’ skills and knowledge are the same but supervisors may specialise in specific functions or work across a variety of functions which reflect the multi-functional nature of the industry.

The course covers the following knowledge and skills:

  • Leadership - leadership styles, supervisory management, diverse needs

  • Customers - customer profiles, desired outcomes

  • People - communicate to motivate and support, maximise team members’ potential

  • Business - vision and values and to achieve targets, Understand the financial operations of hospitality businesses

As an apprentice you need to be employed for at least 30 hours a week.

As an apprentice you will specialise in one of the following areas which will be dependent on the employer you are working for-

  • Food and Beverage Supervisor- With this role you will be maintaining high standards in a range of settings including cafes, pubs, clubs and bars, restaurants, conferencing centres, hotel restaurants and contract caterers. You can be involved in coordinating a range of dining experiences and styles to meet customer and client needs and adapting menus to meet the everchanging diversity on the food market.

  • Bar Supervisor- You will typically work in a pub, nightclub, hotel, restaurant or resort and oversee the effective running of the bar at all times. You will ensure that customer satisfaction is at the forefront of what you and your organisation do and you will ensure professionalism is maintained at all times.

  • Housekeeping Supervisor- You will be responsible for maintaining the high presentation of establishments including hotels, conference venues and other overnight accommodation. You will be supervising a team and be coordinating the work of the cleaners, laundry services and room attendants to ensure that customers receive a top experience in line with the values your organisation represents.

  • Concierge Supervisor- You will be maintaining the porter service in hotels and serviced facilities ensuring that customer requirements including leisure activities, local knowledge, travel, parking and luggage storage are met. You will be promoting safety and security of customers.

  • Front Office Supervisor- You will be responsible for coordinating the reception function of an organisation. Here you can be dealing with reservations in hotels, holiday resorts and conference venues. You will be at the forefront of ensuring that a customers arrival, time at the establishment and departure is delivered according to the organisations standards and meets customers expectations.

  • Events Supervisor- You can be coordinating a variety of functions that take place in a venue for example weddings, business conferences and conventions. Effective coordination is essential in this role to ensure event plans are fulfilled and all runs smoothly meeting customer expectations.

  • Hospitality Outlet Supervisor-You will be supporting management in the day to day business operations, this can be in fast food outlets, coffee or sandwich shops. This tends to be a fast-paced role with the focus on meeting customer expectations in the products and services that they receive.

Assessment

This apprenticeship is assessed by an End Point Assessment (EPA) which uses four assessment methods which include:

  • On Demand Test- This involves a two hour on demand multiple choice test, with 30 minutes reading time. It will include scenario-based questions.

  • Practical Observation- This involves an independent assessor coming out to your workplace to observe you carrying out your duties in line with the standard. This takes place over 4 hours.

  • Business Project- This involves you as an apprentice putting together a project and report focusing on an opportunity/challenge/idea that you feel would make an improvement to the business you are working in. You will produce a written report then following on from this you will partake in a 30-minute presentation of the project with questions and answers.

  • Professional Discussion- This involves taking part in a structured discussion with an independent assessor to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and behaviours not already covered in the previous assessment methods. This takes place over 1.5 hours.

Progression Routes

5 GCSEs in English and Maths grade 4/C or above or Functional Skills Level 2.

Or the ability to demonstrate ability to this level through initial assessments.
