Criminology is the study of crime and criminals. It is a multi-disciplinary approach that draws together methods and perspectives from social sciences including sociology and psychology.
Criminology will provide you with critical thinking, analytical and communication skills, which are attractive to employers both inside and outside the criminal justice sector.
The course would be suitable for anybody currently working in the fields of criminal justice and the legal sector, social work and probation, or anyone wishing to enter these fields.

Qualification: Ascentis Level 2 Certificate in Introduction to Principles of Criminology.

Adult part-time evening course, 10 weeks.

Course Overview

The course consists of two compulsory units: Aspects of Crime and the Criminal Justice System, Crime and Social Groups.

Together these units will provide learners with an understanding of key issues relating to defining crime and deviance, different explanations of crime and take a critical look at how crime is measured.

Learners will also gain an understanding in the key aspects of the criminal justice system, factors that can influence the way individuals experience the criminal justice system, how crime and criminal justice are linked to the social context in which crimes occur, and the limitations of research on crime.

Evidence for each unit is through building up a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate that all the assessment criteria within the unit have been achieved.

The course is 25 hours total delivered over 10 weeks.

It could be seen as a complementary course to the L2 Pre Access psychology / biology / sociology of health courses and as a pathway to the L3 Access course.

Where appropriate, it is possible to study GCSE English Language, GCSE Maths or Functional Skills Literacy and Numeracy in addition to the course.

Entry Requirements

Applicants will preferably have attained Maths and English a level of GCSE grade D/3. You will also need a commitment to study including good attendance, punctuality and behaviour.

Course Fees

This course costs £120.00, including exam fees.

You may be eligible for free study if you are 23 or under and this is your first full Level 2 or 3 course. Alternatively, if you are unemployed, receiving an eligible benefit, and taking the course to help you find employment.
