This is a Full Time, one-year course that is geared towards a career in the varied and challenging Uniformed Protective & Public Services. You will usually be in College for two full days per week and will be expected to undertake regular home study. Learners will develop their knowledge of public policies and how they are practically applied in UK Public Services.
You will also enhance your knowledge on the standards and behaviours that underpin public service organisations which will prepare you for further study or employment. Engaging with LMC’s network of industry professionals will allow you to build your own network of contacts in the public sector and enhances your employability skills.
You will assess and evaluate your personal and vocational skills which are mapped to the requirements of employers in the UK Public Services including the Armed Forces, Police, Health, Prison and Fire & Rescue services amongst others.
On completion of this course you will receive a Pearson BTEC Level 4 HNC in Public Services which is nationally recognised by employers, professional bodies, universities and colleges. The qualification prepares you for higher level careers in the Uniformed Protective Services and the public sector.

As an HNC Public Services sudent you will enhance your presentation skills with delivery of your research project findings which will also develop your communication and verbal skills.
A range of guest speakers are invited to campus to enhance your understanding of future career opportunities and study progression. These include the Army, RAF, Lancashire Constabulary, Border Police, Safe Drive Stay Alive initiative and university Careers Officers.
As well as accessing work placement opportunities with a range of provider links who work with LMC to enhance your relevant industry & employability skills, you will also have the opportunity to go on European visits to Poland, Slovakia & Bulgaria to experience these countries’ cultural differences and learn how other nations manage their Public Services.
You will have a comprehensive tutorial programme which will deliver a range of sessions to support your personal development and life skills. These will include sessions such as Safe Drive Stay Alive, BRAVE, Lateral Thinking, UCAS, Drug and Alcohol Awareness and social issues in the community.
LMC Public Services has a vast array of industry links which enable students to learn and gain experience from industry professionals from a range of different Public Services. These include the Army Reserves at Alexandra Barracks, Army Outreach & Engagement Teams, RAF, Preston Crown Courts, Liverpool Maritime Museum & Border Police, Morecambe Fire & Rescue Service, Lancaster County Council and local support services amongst others.
LMC also work with Steven Jamieson from Lancaster Schools Sports Network Partnership to support and deliver a range of activity sessions to the local community. These links enable students to gain an excellent insight into aspects of what life would be like if they followed careers in these respective public service routes.
Completing this course is the equivalent to completing the first year of a university degree. On successful completion of the HNC Level 4, students will have the opportunity to progress on to the HND Level 5 in Public Services qualification at LMC. Students can progress from the HND Level 5 on to a top-up degree with one of our partner institutions at University of Cumbria or University of Central Lancashire. Students can also gain employment in the Uniformed Protective Services or the public sector with the qualification they achieve.

To study this course you will need one of the following:
A relevant qualification with a minimum of 64 UCAS points
Public Services Level 3 Extended Diploma at Merit/Pass/Pass or above
Relevant NVQ Level 3
Access Diploma
PLUS GCSE English and Maths at grade C/4 or higher. (Mature students without these qualifications are also encouraged to apply).
