This is a two year Full Time course designed to support the future progression into the fast growing Sports industry.

If you love Sport or exercise and want a career in the Sport and Leisure industry, or would like to study a sport related subject at university, this course is ideal for you. Across your 3-4 days in College you will learn about aspects of sports development, fitness and coaching. In addition to your course, you’ll complete industry placements and have access to the FA Level 1 Coaching qualification.

There are a variety of assessment methods on the course including projects, assignments and practical demonstrations of skills. There are exams as part of the course, which will be supported through revision activities, quizzes and mock tests throughout the course. You will be expected to carry out home study on this course to ensure assignment completion.

Course Overview

During this course, students take part in a range of activities that develop the skills and knowledge required to progress into the Sports and Leisure industry. Activities include:

  • A mixture of theory and practical sessions

  • FA Level 1 Coaching in Football Certificate

  • Opportunities for European visits for coaching and cultural experiences

  • National Citizenship Service programme

  • 2 week course related work placement

  • Tutorial support

Students on this course are also eligible to trial for The LMC Football Academy; a full-time football programme available to all students across Sports & Public Services at Lancaster & Morecambe College, delivered by UEFA qualified coaches. The Academy can offer you:

  • Full-time education and training in football

  • Excellent progression routes, including scholarships to USA & Canada

  • Valuable sport related work experience

  • FA Level coaching qualification

  • European project opportunities, including a football tour to Alicante

  • Strength and conditioning training

  • Completion of your NCS award

  • Participation in the Duke of Edinburgh

Industry Links

Students will complete a 2 week work placement that will develop some of the work based skills required for entry into the industry. Placement opportunities that students are supported in gaining include:

• PE Teacher in secondary school
• Shadowing PE specialists in primary schools
• Leisure Assistant in a leisure centre
• Gym Instructor or personal trainer
• Sports Development Officer for governing body or council
• European voluntary leadership schemes

Progression Routes

The course prepares students for progression to higher education and employment. Students progressing on to higher education are able to study the Sport HNC and HND at LMC, or may choose to study a degree such as Sports Coaching, Sports Development or Sports Science.

Previous students have gone on to work in a variety of exciting roles such as:

  • Personal Trainer

  • Sport Development Officer

  • Sports Coach

  • PE Teacher

  • Fitness Instructor

Entry Requirements

This course is suitable for school leavers, aged 16-19, who have an active interest in fitness and Sport.

To study this course you must:

  • Show enthusiasm for the subject area

  • Have evidence of good skills within Sport

  • Enjoy working with other people

  • Show a commitment to study

  • Be able to work independently

  • Have good interpersonal skills

You must also have 5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or higher including English and Maths OR a related Level 2 qualification PLUS grade C/4 or higher in English and Maths.
