Education is a key aspect of addressing environmental challenges including climate change, and the DfE now requires climate change education to be embedded in all schools and colleges.

The qualification is relevant to a variety of educators and across a range of settings, including schools, colleges and youth work; you do not have to be in a teaching role. It is especially relevant for those undertaking a named Sustainability Lead role, as required by the DfE Climate and Climate Change strategy.

Online option - 8 monthly 2-hour sessions on Tuesday 4pm - 6pm accessed via Microsoft Teams

Face to Face option - 8 monthly 2-hour sessions on Wednesday 4pm - 6pm at Lancaster & Morecambe College

Course Overview

For this course the topics include:

  • Climate Change and climate equality

  • The benefits and processes of decarbonisation

  • The 3 pillars of Sustainability and the UN Sustainable Development Goals

  • The impact of human activity on the environment and the value of nature

  • Biodiversity and Sustainable Food production

  • Waste and linear, circular, doughnut economies

  • Adaptation and mitigation solutions: Renewable Energy and Sustainable Transport

  • Sustainable and environmental education pedagogy

  • Transformative educational approaches

Assessment - There are 6 assignments and some additional questions to achieve the qualification; online support sessions are provided each month.

Cost - The course is free for those working or living in the Lancaster City Council area; for those living outside the area the fee is £400 to include registration and certification.

Entry Requirements

There is no specific entry criteria for the course, but you will need to be able to complete assignments at a Level 5 standard.
