The T Level transition programme in Education & Early Years is a Level 2, 1-year programme which is specifically designed to support students to develop the skills, experience, knowledge and behaviours to support progression onto a T Level in Education & Childcare. This foundation year programme is suitable for students who are not quite ready to start a T Level but have the potential to progress onto one.

It is intended for those who do not yet meet the entry requirements, or who may need to develop further first. The course provides a firm foundation to be able to go on and succeed on a T Level in Education & Childcare, and introduces students to the T Level content.

Course Overview

The components of this study programme include:

  • A qualification in Childcare to develop core knowledge

  • Further maths and English study to be able to meet the GCSE entry requirements for a T Level in Education & Childcare

  • Digital skills

  • Work experience and preparation

  • Introductory technical skills

  • Pastoral support and personal development

Students will also learn about topics specific to children’s play, learning and development, including:

  • Child development

  • Play, learning and educational activities for children and young people

  • Prepare environments for children and young people

  • Observation of children and young people’s learning and development

Assessment is through a range of methods including assignments, tasks, exams, practical activities, case studies or a portfolio of evidence, as well as project work. The course is classroom based, but also includes 250 hours in the workplace. There will be a requirement to complete home study as part of this qualification.

During the study programme there will be a programme of enrichment opportunities. You will benefit from inspiring trips and experiences, meetings with industry experts, visits to leading companies in the sector, and masterclasses from local employers to name a few.

Industry Links

This course involves a substantial industry placement with an external employer. There is a requirement of 250 hours in the workplace that allows learners to practically apply knowledge and skills. This will prepare learners for the 750-hour industry experience requirements of the T Level.

Whilst completing this qualification, students will have an opportunity to develop the essential skills, knowledge and behaviours that employers look for in an employee.

These include:
• Workplace behaviour and dress
• Interpersonal skills
• Communication skills
• Understanding work practices

Progression Routes

As this is a T Level transition programme, we expect students to progress onto the T Level programme in Education & Childcareafter completing this foundation year, providing they have met the entry requirements of the T Level programme.

Progression routes include:

  • T Level in Education & Childcare

  • Apprenticeships in Education or Childcare

Entry Requirements

You will need to demonstrate the values and behaviours required for occupational roles when working with children including appropriate workplace behaviour and dress, appropriate interpersonal skills, communication with team members and personal manners. Good people skills and confidence interacting with children are ideal personal qualities needed to work in Education and Childcare.

Entry requirements:

  • 4 GCSEs at grade 3 and above including GCSE English language and maths.

  • One of the English Language or maths must be at a grade 4.

  • A Level 1 Diploma qualification in the subject area with GCSE English language and maths at grade 3. One of the English Language or maths must be at a grade 4.

  • Satisfactory interview, assessment, school report and / or satisfactory reference.

You will also need:

  • Enthusiasm for the subject

  • Commitment to study (positive attendance, punctuality and behaviour)

  • To be able to work independently

  • To enjoy working with children

  • Good interpersonal skills

  • A proven interest and enjoyment in childcare

  • A satisfactory DBS check

  • It is also important you have a strong commitment to your studies and to continue your studies at Level 3.
