Course Overview

As a Teaching Assistant apprentice, you will be supporting the class teacher in order to enhance learning in an educational setting.

You will be entering an occupation where you will have the opportunity to work with all ages, supporting all learners. You can choose to work and progress in primary, secondary, special schools, alternative provision as well as further education settings including sixth forms and colleges.

Pursuing a career as a Teaching Assistant typical roles and responsibilities include -

  • Supporting the class teacher in order to aid the progress and development of learners either on a group or one to one basis.

  • Ensuring that learners understand their work, know their learning objectives and display positive behaviours in order to make progress.

  • Delivering both individual and small group teaching, using and applying a range of supportive strategies to help learners with a range of abilities.

  • Supporting children with special educational needs and disabilities as well as learners with social, emotional and mental health vulnerabilities.

  • Working in partnership with teachers and other professionals within both the school and educational system and parents/carers in order to promote the most positive outcomes for the children.

  • Adapting the planning of small group and individual activities under the direction of the teacher to meet individual needs.

  • Implementing safeguarding policies and safe working practices at all times.

  • Supporting the development of a safe, stimulating and nurturing learning environment.

  • Working within a framework of national legislation regarding safeguarding and within the policies and procedures of the individual education organisation you are working for.

  • Promote positive behaviours and deal with any negative behaviours and incidents accordingly.

Assessment

You will be building up a portfolio of evidence throughout the duration of the programme to support you when you reach the End Point Assessment (EPA) stage of the apprenticeship which involves two parts:

  • Observation with Questions- This involves being assessed by an independent assessor carrying out your duties in the workplace. It will take place over two hours and you will be asked at least four questions.

  • Professional Discussion underpinned by a Portfolio of Evidence- This involves an independent assessor asking you at least ten questions regarding your understanding of your job role in line with the standard. This discussion will last at least 90 minutes. Prior to the discussion you will build up a portfolio of evidence to support you in being able to answer the questions

Progression Routes

Upon completion of your Level 3 Apprenticeship you will be qualified as a Level 3 Teaching Assistant and you may wish to progress onto full time work in the sector.

You may also wish to continue your studies, working towards the Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) course.

To study this Apprenticeship you must:

  • Have enthusiasm for the subject area

  • Enjoy working with people

  • Have good timekeeping

  • Have a commitment to study

  • Be able to work independently

  • Have good interpersonal and communication skills

  • Attention to detail

  • Work well individually and as part of a team

5 GCSEs in English and Maths grade 4/C or above or Functional Skills Level 2.

Or the ability to demonstrate ability to this level through initial assessments.
