This course is an introduction to the Land-based industries with a particular focus on animal care and welfare. It provides an opportunity to investigate job opportunities and to acquire appropriate vocational skills.
The course will include a substantial amount of careers related learning designed to support progression to the suitable next step, this could include educational trips, employability skills sessions and employer encounters such as guest speakers. For 16-18 year old learners this will be delivered as a study programme which includes English and Maths where applicable.
The qualification you will receive is the City & Guilds Level 1 Land-Based Diploma which is assessed by online exams, coursework, projects, written assignments and observation of practical competence.
The timetable will cover 3 days per week in College; lessons are a mix of classroom based theory lessons and practical workshop sessions where you will gain the required underpinning knowledge of domestic and wild animals and the practical husbandry skills with a variety of small animals. There will be some home study required.
Work related experience is a mandatory part of the qualification where you must complete a minimum of 60 hours’ work within a Land-based industry setting.

Work related experience is an essential part of the Land-based curriculum allowing you to apply the knowledge you have gained in class and develop the work behaviours required for the Land-based industry.
There is a mandatory element of the course, that you are required to complete a minimum number of hours (set by the examining body) in an external work placement over a 2 week block in term 2.
Support is available from our Work Placement Co-ordinator who will work with you to ensure you are placed with an appropriate employer.
Progression opportunities within College include the Aspire Pathway to Animal Studies, the Animal Care & Welfare Assistant Traineeship and the Animal Care Level 2 course.
