Job Description

Casual Learning Support Assistant
£11.74 per hour + appropriate holiday pay
Note: each month an additional 10% at this rate is paid for every scheduled classroom hour to allow time for resulting admin.

Do you have experience of supporting people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities in an educational environment?

Lancaster & Morecambe College is looking for individuals who relate well to young people and adults, show an understanding of learning needs, promote inclusive learning and have a genuine desire to support students both inside and outside the classroom.

Working across a range of courses, you will demonstrate a positive, sensitive and practical attitude which will empower learners and promote independence.

Willing to work flexibly, you will possess good I.T skills and have GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent) or be willing to work towards this.

Key Tasks / Responsibilities

Job Purpose: To support students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities in the classroom under the guidance of the class tutor and to provide supervision and support outside the classroom as required, promoting inclusive learning.

  1. Provide learning and ‘skills for life’ support to students who experience learning difficulties and/or disabilities across college under the general guidance of the class tutor.
  2. Demonstrate a positive, sensitive and practical attitude to personal care which empowers learners and promotes personal dignity. Support learners during other non-educational activities such as lunch breaks, escort to and from taxi.
  3. Contribute to the planning and evaluation of sessions when providing support to students and act as advocate where necessary.
  4. Maintain up to date individual student records and other documentation as required to maintain Additional Learning Support systems and comply with good practice and audit requirements.
  5. Participate in Additional Learning Support meetings, relevant course meetings, meetings with parents/carers and external agencies, section training sessions and the College Professional Development Programme.
  6. Positively promote the College policy on Equality and Diversity by demonstrating best practice on inclusive learning. This may include adapting resources, use of assistive technology, acting as an impartial scribe.
  7. Other duties commensurate with the grade of post as required, including exam invigilation during peak exam times as required.

Skills & Experience Required

Experience 

Essential - Measured by application form and interview

  • Experience of working with people with disabilities in an educational environment
  • Practical experience in and able to demonstrate strong IT skills

  • Liaise with parents/carers/ external support agencies

Qualifications

Essential - Measured by application form, interview and assessment*

  • GCSE Grade 4/C or above in Maths and English (or equivalent Level 2)*

  • Level 2 Certificate in Learning Support
  • BSL
  • First Aid
  • Basic Food Hygiene Certificate
  • Moving and Handling Certificate

Skills / Attributes

  • Relate well to young people and adults, showing an understanding of individuals’ learning needs and how to promote independence
  • Ability to quickly develop knowledge of course requirements and effectively identify barriers to learning
  • Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills
  • Good written, IT and verbal communication skills
  • Able to work as part of a team, or as an individual, using own initiative where relevant

Desirable -  Measured by interview

  • Technology-based administrative skills such as use of photocopier, scanner, ergonomic/ adaptive computer mouse etc.

Personal
