LMC welcomed a team of visitors from the Careers and Enterprise Company (CEC), the national body for careers education, onto campus last week to showcase their aspirational and award-winning careers provision.
Representatives from the CEC, the Lancashire Careers Hub and the Cumbria Careers Hub joined the College's careers team for an informative day of discussions, looking at the priorities for careers education in the post-16 sector, and the importance of embedding sustainability within the careers programme and across the whole curriculum.
Victoria Carter, Careers Lead at LMC, hosted the day and accompanied the visitors on their tour of the College's facilities.
We were thrilled to be approached by the CEC, who were keen to visit our campus and learn more about the innovative approach we take to embedding careers across all aspects of the curriculum. They met with students and tutors who showed them our industry-standard, low carbon kitchens and clinical skills ward, which are crucial for providing our learners with real-work environments to develop essential skills for their specific sectors. We also showcased our fantastic VR facilities which we use for delivering creative careers sessions and interactive tutorials.
A focus of the day was reviewing the College's commitment to supporting learners to develop knowledge about green careers and the impact sustainability will have on future jobs. The College was recognised as Careers Champions in 2023 for its innovative approach to promoting sustainable education, and in March 2024, was presented with the CEC Careers Excellence Award for 'Building Future Skills' in recognition of this cutting-edge work. A number of LMC staff have recently completed a L4 Teaching & Learning for Sustainable Development qualification, and the careers team are now creating a range of new workshops for pupils from local primary and secondary schools across the district.
The College's CEIAG Coordinator, Briony Roberts, impressed everyone with an informative session on the new Vocational Profile, a bespoke resource she has created, which allows LMC learners to track all of their careers-related learning and empowers them to make informed choices about future careers and educational progression.
The feedback from the day was incredibly positive and CEC Education Manager, Rachel Green said,
It was an absolute pleasure to experience the passion and drive from all the staff and to hear first hand, the impact on the learners.
Reflecting on the success of the visit, Victoria Carter said,
We are a vocational college and our first priority is to prepare our learners to progress into employment or onto Higher Education. Careers is at the core of everything we do, and we are really proud of our varied and relevant careers programme, so it was an honour to have the opportunity to share our vision with the team from the Careers & Enterprise Company.
