Lancaster & Morecambe College (LMC) has created over 30 Distance Learning courses for anyone over the age of 19 to access for free, from the comfort of their own homes.
The courses are in response to discussions between LMC and employers about industry skills gaps and relevant qualifications which meet the needs of our local labour market, and have seen a recent 42% increase in enrolments. The pandemic prompted many adults across the country to retrain or gain new qualifications, and during national lockdowns, online learning became the only way to fulfil development needs.
Charlotte Rawes, the College’s Director of Apprenticeships & Employer Engagement said:
We are immensely proud of our Distance Learning provision. We offer opportunities for people to access learning from their own home, providing excellent career enhancing opportunities at a time that suits individuals. We have exceptional tutors to support and guide learners through the course, and learners studying with LMC are 8% more likely to achieve.
Following the release of statistics relating to suicide and self-harm within the Lancaster & Morecambe district, the College launched its Distance Learning provision with Level 1 Mental Health Awareness which created an excellent opportunity for local employers and agencies to access relevant information beneficial to them, their clients, and their workforce.
Since beginning her Distance Learning journey during lockdown, Lancaster local Paloma Vera has realised her passion in mental health awareness and is now working towards a career in the industry. She commented:
The courses provided me an opportunity to explore a topic I am passionate about in my own time, without having to commit any time required from my full-time job. The tutors were very helpful, not only in correcting assessments, but also providing additional information to widen my knowledge
