I love working with people of all ages and backgrounds and seeing them make progress and achieve their qualifications, sometimes in “small” ways, such as remembering how to do a written multiplication.

Alison started at Lancaster & Morecambe College in 2005, working as a Casual Learning Support Tutor. She is now one of our Functional Skills Co-ordinators and plays a part in our sustainability missions.

Alison, an LMC Alumni herself, now works closely with apprentices who are studying Level 1 or Level 2 Functional Skills English or Maths. These courses are designed to equip you with the basics of English and Maths, how to use them practically in your personal and work life and support you in obtaining a nationally recognised qualification.

My role involves working with small groups or on a 1-1 basis, either in College or visiting students in the workplace. I am responsible for supporting my students to achieve their qualifications, so that they can gain their full Apprenticeship. Another part of my role includes various administration tasks such as booking exams.

English and Maths are essential subjects that are included in most training and education programmes, which is why it is important to have these qualifications. People of all ages study on Functional Skills courses as it opens doors to new careers and even Higher Education courses.

One of my favorite parts of my job is seeing students make progress and achieve their qualifications, sometimes in “small” ways, such as remembering how to do a written multiplication. I also love working with people of all ages and backgrounds, and  working with such lovely colleagues, and more recently, being able to pursue a long-time interest of mine in sustainability and to develop and run some training for both staff and students.

As well as teaching Functional Skills, Alison has a passion for sustainability. She runs various sessions focused on sustainability to educate staff and students on the issues we face as a whole and how we can combat climate change personally here at College and at home.

When asked what she would say to someone thinking of taking Functional Skills classes, Alison said:

Leave behind any negative experiences of English or Maths - we will work with you to identify your needs and your availability and support you in ways that suit your learning styles to achieve.
