I really enjoy being part of the LMC Beauty Team and working within the department. Watching my students grow and develop their ideas and skillsets week on week is a really exciting part of my role, particularly when I can see them challenging themselves to get creative and try out new and different ideas.
Sophie Hodgson works within the Beauty Therapy Team as a Media Make-up Artist lecturer on the Media Make-up Level 2 course and the Theatrical & Media Make-up Level 3 course at Lancaster & Morecambe College. She started at LMC in November 2022 as she really wanted to share her passion, knowledge and professional industry experience with our students.

Sophie has worked in the industry herself for many years and has worked with some fantastic clients. She describes choosing to enter the hair and make-up industry has changed her life and offered her so many amazing opportunities that she only dreamt about before her training. She has worked with famous celebrities, TV & filmmakers, been part of many brides’ wedding days and had plenty of opportunities to travel abroad for jobs too.
With Sophie's professional background and industry experience, she is able to guide our students on the skills and knowledge they need to know on what it’s like to work in the industry, including the different the aspects involved in the industry such as make-up for live events, to make-up designing for film and TV, to creating the perfect bridal look for that special day and many more.
Sophie teaches the students an array of make-up artistry skills including:
I want to build the students' confidence to enable them to have transferrable skills to take out into the world of work and for them to be able to use these skills in the different areas of the industry once they leave College. I want to unlock each student’s creative flair and see them discover new strengths and passions within the world of make-up artistry.
When asked what advice would she give to someone applying for the Theatrical & Media Make-up course, she said:
I would say anyone looking into studying make-up artistry that they should do their research and choose the course that’s right for them. The industry has so many different avenues and options, if you are interested in hair or make-up, just go for it – who knows where the training could lead you!

I would say come to College, study Beauty Therapy, be pampered, pamper clients, but be prepared to work hard for the qualifications to get far in the industry. It's a very rewarding career to go into, putting smiles on clients faces and giving them a new found confidence.

My favourite part of this role is working with such an amazing team here at Lancaster & Morecambe College, and also being able to pass on my industry knowledge to all my students and support them in their journey to becoming a Beauty Therapist.
The most satisfying part of my job role is inspiring students to have the confidence to become beauty therapists and work in their dream careers.
